Strange House

Strange House, 210 Evelyn Road, London, SE8

The house is in an old pub yard, primarily concealed from the street outside by an existing brick perimeter wall. The house is structured with solid spruce panels fabricated in a Swiss factory and was erected on-site in a week. The windows, doors and internal fit-out are of FSC tropical hardwood from Nicaragua, felled by Hurricane Felix. Using the existing site conditions, materials, furniture’s, and the interior of the house created a warm and beautiful new home.

The house was completed in 2010 and has been internationally published. It has won awards from the RIBA, AIA and the Wood Awards. In 2013, Hugh Strange Architect’s office was built adjacent to the house, also constructed in cross-laminated structural timber and tropical hardwood.
